Canon 40D, L 17-40 @ 32 ISO 400 f4 @1/80 Manual mode.
550 EX mounted on a light stand with 32" translucent white umbrella. Auto mode.
On camera ST-E2 triggered off camera flash.
Even when the camera is in manual mode, flash is still auto flash. Since I knew flash light is going to take care of exposing the subjects properly, I chose maximum aperture my lens allowed – f4 – and choose 1/80, as that is longest time I thought I would be able to hand hold my non IS lens without causing shake.

What caused the distracting vignette in the photograph? Lens hood? Slave flash? What is the advantage of using a translucent white umbrella? Why not bounce off from a white ceiling? Is the vignette a desired effect which photographer wanted in this photograph deliberately?
ReplyDeleteRao garu,
ReplyDeleteVignette is added in post process in light room using 'post crop vignette'. Its added to bring the attention to the subject.
Using Translucent umbrella gives a lilbit more control in terms of the distance and angle of light spread. Also, it helps in controlling light from hitting the background.
Ramana garu,
ReplyDeleteI am just trying to understand your settings. You used the off camera flash triggering with an umbrella to better control the light source and direction. But what I do not understand clearly is that you were saying since the flash is going to take care of the exposure, you said you used the widest aperture? Doesn't the widest aperture allow more light?
I am not a big fan of vignetting although my wife is!
I feel the photo is a little soft and noisy to my taste (very subjective), I would use a smaller aperture and a tad faster shutter speed or use a tripod.
Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
Pavan,
ReplyDeleteIn EOS systems even when the exposure on camera is set to M (Manual) the flash still fires in auto mode (ETTL). The short pre flash will determine what is the amount of flash light required for the exposure and emit that much. It continuously measures for the changing light even during the exposure, that's why it’s called. ‘Evaluative’ Thru The Lens.
I agree on softness and noise part. I had only one 550Ex that time; I could have shot this with a smaller aperture at higher ISO and fix the noise in PP.
